DCP Midstream LLC said Monday that several construction projects in northern Colorado, either planned or underway, will double its natural gas processing capacity to 800 million cubic feet per day by the end of 2014.
DCP, a private natural gas processing company based in Denver, already is the largest natural gas processor in the Denver-Julesburg Basin, which sprawls north and east of Denver into Nebraska.
The company currently operates seven processing plants in northern Colorado that collectively can handle 400 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.
Energy companies have said they plan to spend billions of dollars a year drilling for crude oil and natural gas in the basin. A rock layer called the Niobrara formation has drawn attention in the last few years for its ability to produce crude oil using horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques.
