General contractors willing to look for work outside cities in the nation’s booming oil and gas shale plays could find big opportunities. That’s according to John Doherty, Chicago-based advisory leader forPricewaterhouseCoopers’ engineering and construction division.
In the last few years, the big shale plays across the United States have caused the domestic production of oil and natural gas to surge to record-breaking heights. Billions of dollars worth of investment is pouring into many areas, including the Marcellus natural gas basin in the East, the Bakken oil field in North Dakota, and the Denver-Julesburg Basin in Colorado.
Oil and gas companies have hired contractors to build new office space, warehouses and processing facilities north and east of Denver. But there also may be opportunities for work in the oil and gas fields, Doherty said.
