Anadarko hunts for oil near I-70

The hunt for oil in Colorado’s Niobrara shale formation has reached metro Denver.

Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: APC) plans a six-month, 3-D seismic study of 144 square miles east of Aurora, just beyond the E-470 beltway between Denver International Airport and the Lowry Bombing Range in Arapahoe County. It will start around April 1, said John Christiansen, spokesman for Anadarko, which is based in The Woodlands, Texas.

“This is in the early stages of trying to model the subsurface,” Christiansen said. “It’s typical in oil and gas operations, when you’re looking at an area for prospectivity, to do seismic and get more information before you move forward with anything else.
