WPX raises the number of drilling rigs it’s running in Colorado

WPX Energy Inc. is boosting the number of drilling rigs it’s running in western Colorado and plans to spend about $400 million in the state this year.

The Tulsa, Okla.-based company (NYSE: WPX) on Wednesday said it’s deploying seven drilling rigs in the Piceance Basin for the rest of the the year — two more than the company had previously planned.

WPX, which has an office in Denver, said adding the two rigs will cost about $60 million, boosting the company’s investment in Colorado to a total of about $400 million this year, a spokesman said.
